Stained Glass ~ Tetons and Wildflowers

Several weeks ago, a wonderful lady contacted me about doing a stained glass piece for her. She wanted a piece with the Tetons and yellow wildflowers. I was so excited about doing a stained glass piece, and the Jackson Hole area always has a special place in my heart.

The following week, my husband and I went to the Jackson area for a family reunion. I received wonderful inspiration for the piece, as the wildflowers were completely out of this world!!! I’ve never seen anything so beautiful. So when we got back from our little vacay, I got to work. It was so fun designing the pattern, choosing the glass, and making this piece. It turned out so good that I want to keep it. Or maybe remake it for myself! At any rate, it was so wonderful doing stained glass again and it reminded me of how much I love it.

I’m back!!

After what seems like a little break, I’m back!!! The past few months have been quite hectic, and my husband and I just made a whirlwind move from California to Virginia. But now we’re settled here, and I’m ready to get back into the swing of things. Bring on the art projects!

After I got my art room here unpacked, the first thing I did was pull out my watercolors to paint my mom something special. A year or two ago, I did a watercolor painting for my dad of the ranch he grew up on. It turned out so lovely, and now it graces the presence of their home:

This time, my mother asked me to paint a picture of my grandpa’s backyard. It has been something I have been meaning to do, but have gotten sidetracked. Several months ago, my grandfather passed away, and I knew that this painting was something I needed to do. I will always have a tender spot in my heart for my grandpa and the love he put into his yard. My best memories of him were visiting my grandma and grandpa at their house, going in their immaculate yard, and picking raspberries.

Anyway, here is the finished product:

I think it turned out great, and now my parents both have a watercolor of their homes growing up!

Christmas Time Projects

Hey all! I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and New Years. Mine was fantastic. We were able to spend lots of time with our families, we had a few days to relax, and tomorrow the real world (i.e. work) resumes.

I figured that since Christmas is passed, I could finally post a few projects I have recently been working on. Project #1: A digital painting I did for my sister’s brother-in-law, who just got married last week. This was their wedding present:

My sister, Erin, is a fantastic photographer and took this engagement picture, and I created it into a lovely digital painting for their new little place together. They are such a beautiful couple, are they not?

Project #2 was another digital painting that I did, this time for my boss. It is of her three children, and will go in the office. I was very pleased with how it turned out. What darling kids!

Well, that’s it! My most recent projects. Hopefully there will be many more to come in 2o11. Always remember that a work of art makes a wonderful and very meaningful gift. I am sure these ones did.

Grandma and Grandpa’s House

For my Grandma and Grandpa’s Christmas present, I decided to paint them a little picture of their home. Hopefully this post won’t ruin the surprise, but I don’t think they use a computer. For some reason this little painting means so much to me . . . it is the first home they ever owned, one that they spent over 50 years of marriage in. This home has so many memories. What do you think?

Isn’t that crazy that it’s alread November and I’m working on Christmas presents? It’s a great time of the year to remember what is most important. Let the holiday season begin!

Awww, that made me feel good!

It’s been a little while since I have posted anything, so I thought I’d give a quick update about my book! Although this is a long process, things are coming right along. I’ve done a lots of revisions, and I’m so happy with the way it’s all turning out. Each page is really polished.

I also just got word back from my publisher. He had an editor look over everything to make any suggestions, etc. Here are the comments that the editor said at the end:

“Excellent story. Kids will love it, and their parents would like it, also. I like the rhyming (good symmetry). The story has real cohesion. Every part seems to fall into place. These are all strong features, however the best part of the book, what really makes it stand out…are the illustrations. They are beautifully done.”

Isn’t that so nice? When I read that, I almost got tears in my eyes, I was so happy. Now the book is going to get a final once over, the publisher is going to finalize all the printing plans, and then off to the printer it goes! It will still be at least a few months, as I expected it would be,  but it’s starting to be a reality!! Yay!

Coming Soon . . .

“The Adventures of Buffalo Joe and the Blackbird with the Broken Wing!”

That’s right!! My children’s book is going to be published!! This past week, everything has sort of fallen into place, and I am ecstatic! Since I was in Jackson Hole all week, I met with a local publisher while there, and he said he loved my work.  I am thrilled because this publisher seems to be the perfect fit for my book. Check out Homestead Publishing here.

I do have a lot of work to do before my deadline, however, so if I am MIA for the next little while, you know why!! Now I need to get to work . . .

Pattern Design

Stained Glass is something that I absolutely love, thanks to my favorite job I had in high school. My senior year, I landed a job at a stained glass shop where I was trained in foil work. Although I only worked there for about a year before I went away to college, it really spurred my interest, and ever since then, I’ve kept it up!

I thought I’d show you the latest stained glass project that I’m working on. For one of our wedding presents, we received a beautiful piece of artwork with pressed wildflowers. It’s hung beautifully in our home for nearly 4 years, until it fell off the wall and the glass shattered. I was so bummed about it, but was able to salvage the lovely wood frame, and decided to create a stained glass piece to go inside. Here is the pattern that I created:

It’s a simple pattern of tulips, and I think it turned out great! I love flowers . . . I can’t seem to stray from them in my artwork . . . they are my very favorite. Here are some things that you will notice in the pattern design when you look closely:

-each piece labeled with a number
– lines on each piece that indicate the grain direction of the glass
– each piece labeled with a letter, which represents the color/type of glass used

And important things to keep in mind while creating a stained glass pattern:

-The more pieces in the pattern, the more intricate your stained glass project will be. And in many cases, more pieces = more difficulty.
-Try not to have pieces that are very, very small. They could get lost in the solder and end up not being seen. Small pieces also add difficulty to every project.
-While creating a pattern, every piece needs to be thought about. Each individual piece should not have jagged or sharp curves, as it is very tricky–and in some cases, impossible to cut that piece of glass.

So, there you have it! This project is currently under works. Stay tuned for the finished project! Also, if anyone is interested in their own pattern design/custom piece of stained glass made by me, give me a holler. I would be thrilled!

Postcard Promotion

I love being an artist! It is one of the funnest and most rewarding things for me. I love spending my time creating beautiful pictures, and I love pictures that tell a story . . . one of the many reasons I decided to pursue illustration as a career. One of the things that I am aspiring towards is becoming a published illustrator. Having my artwork tell a story in children’s book would seriously be a dream come true!! So this past week, this was my task:

I addressed and sent 100 postcards to various publishers across the country. Didn’t they turn out fantastic? This is one of the most renowned ways that illustrators promote themselves as professionals. Hopefully the art directors of all these publishing companies will take a look at my postcard and my website and say, “She’s our girl!”

Cross your fingers that it’s a success!

Welcome!

Hey all! Welcome to my new website and my brand new blog! Looks fantastic, doesn’t it? That is thanks to my wonderful husband. He’s been doing all the hard work developing this site. This has been a project in the works for a while now, and we’re quite the team. I did the design, and my husband actually made this website a reality.

Even though this website is up and running, it is still very much in the construction phase. So check back often to see all the updates we’ll be doing. With that said, I would love to hear from you! Feel free to send me a message with any questions you may have, or even just to say hello!

And since every blog post is a little more fun with a picture, here are two paintings of mine that are hanging up at a local gallery here in town.
